“I came to cast fire upon the earth”
Luke 12:49-53
“I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division; for henceforth in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against her mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
Reflection
The image of fire in biblical times was often associated with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use of fire, such as God’s revelation to Moses through the burning bush in the wilderness which was not consumed by the flames (Exodus 3:2). There is opposition to the values of Jesus in situations like abortion, euthanasia, sexuality, family, migration and asylum, and others. People have put themselves in danger in many countries for these, and for the right to religious freedom. There have been more martyrs for Christian faith in the last 100 years than in the history of the church. Jesus causes trouble, not because he wants to, but because his message threatens their safety and security.
Lasallian Guiding Principles
LGP states that the spirit if faith invites us always to search for God’s will. Basically, this involves searching for the best way to carry out God;s saving plan”. (Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echevarria FSC). God’s saving plan is the integral salvation and liberation of all, and especially of those who experience the greatest level of need.
