Let us all remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Matthew 20:1-16
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, `You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, `Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, `Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, `You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, `Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, `These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, `Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”
Reflection
What can work and wages, welfare and the unemployed tell us about the kingdom of God? The gospel reminds us the Kingdom of God doesn’t work in such a way that the first believers or followers of Christ will be more gratified but all will receive the same grace from God. We have a generous God. He is equal to all despite all the circumstances or differences of the persons just like in the parable story. People thought they were discriminated and judge not equally. God works in mysterious ways. We tend to compare ourselves with the people around us but that kind of thinking should be eradicated for we should be grateful in the success of others. I pray that all people in the world should uplift one another instead of bringing each other down; just so we can value more from it.
Lasallian Guiding Principle
Based from the LGP it is stated there that, “…the Spirit of Faith is a spirit that allows one to trust in God’s loving presence and providence when acting God’s will.” In the gospel, it is important we offer all our trust and have faith to God and remember that He will not do anything disadvantageous for us. His decision will be always for the good of all. Just like Saint John Baptist de La Salle, his faith in God is a good example for us. SJBDLS sacrificed everything that he has to help the less fortunate ones. St John Baptist De La Salle doesn’t know what will happen to him afterwards, but his spirit of faith and belief in God brought him to wherever he is right now; wherein it is very evident that he left a big mark to the lives of every Lasallian. That is why as part of the Lasallian Community we should work as one and encourage one another to see that with faith, trust and love for God we can become instruments for God’s will to become possible.
